crash course in photography

As you may or may not know, I was commissioned by the Boys and Girls Club to photograph the Summer League Jr. NBA basketball games and their players. When it comes to photography, I am somewhat a novice but let me tell you .... I'm learning pretty quick. For me, learning comes easier to me when I have real life experiences to teach me. Prior to shooting for these games, I did not understand photography speak. Now that I have to learn, I'm starting to comprehend. I read up on what lenses work best as well as what settings work for the quick motion in basketball.

I ordered the 85mm f/1.8D AF. Here are some pictures from the this past weekend.

The thing I love about the 85mm lens is how it blurs out the background. The thing I don't love too much about it is that it does not zoom. After the game, I took my show on the road to a birthday party (pictures forthcoming).

One thing about photography .... it's kind of addictive.

and so it begins

Who is fisheyed Fool? Fish Eyed Fool is a novice (and I do mean novice) photographer. This past Mother's Day, I received one of the best gifts ever. A Nikon D5000. I went from your basic point-and-shoot camera to this beautiful D-SLR. That's like trading in your '95 Honda for a clean new BMW truck.

I have no professional photography experience. I've really haven't taken very many pictures over the years so receiving such a nice camera was a little intimidating at first. I have been unemployed for almost 2 years now which has been bittersweet. Sweet because I have had a lot of time with my kids, bitter because we are really a two income family. With my unemployment running dry, I have been asking myself, "Self, how can I make some money with this beautiful new camera?"

This past Thursday, I brought my camera with me to my son's basketball game at the Boys and Girls Club. The director of the basketball program asked if I was any good with taking pictures. He had some things in mind for the trophies this season which would involve action shots of the players. Being one to seize opportunities told him I was wonderful behind the lens. *wink, wink*

So now, I have a part-time hustle. I am THE photographer for the Boys and Girls Club Summer Basketball League. Yes, ME! I have no resume. No portfolio. Just a beautiful new camera and one little old basic lens. And so the challenge begins. The challenge to produce professional action shots in less than 30 days. I have spent the past 48 hours combing the web for tips on how to get that magic shot and researching the best lenses to use.

Join me on my journey as I create a new business - Fish Eyed Fool Photography. This blogspot is my own little personal diary as I take the road less traveled. I hope this fool doesn't make too much of a fool of herself. It won't be the first time I've accepted a challenge a little over my head. I've risen to the occasion before. I think I can do it again.
